Environmental Education Book ReviewsThese book shelves created at goodreads.com, are full of books for children and adults that discuss environmental education in various ways. The children's books have great illustrations and pictures to help children understand the planet and what they can do to protect it. The adult books are great resources for teachers and parents to gain better knowledge for how to teach environmental education and how to improve teaching it in classrooms or just in everyday life of children and students. It is not only important to teach children about the environment, but it is also crucial that teachers and parents learn how to teach this topic effectively.

YouTube videos for kidsThese three videos are great ways for children to learn about their planet, and they are great clips to show in a classroom. The images and colors used in each video help entertain children and make them want to keep watching.
The first clip is called Happy and was used in a commercial in the year 2009 for the World Wildlife Fund. The video starts out by showing a panda bear, and the narrator begins explaining what must happen for the panda to be happy. He goes through trees, air, climate, nature, and people. The idea of this video is to show how everything in the world connects and how important it is to keep each part happy. The second video is called Plastic Planet and was uploaded to Youtube by Natracare. I really enjoyed this video because the images tell a story instead of having someone narrate it. It all starts out with a young girl who is reprimanded by her friends for her plastic grocery bags. Her friends begin to show her how much her three plastic bags can effect the planet. The first image shown is an earth with a frown. Then a sequence of what happens when a piece of plastic is dumped into the ocean is played next. At the end, the earth is completely covered in plastic. These images teach the girl a lesson about how she can help prevent all of this from happening by making better choices each day, to make the earth smile. After the cartoon, there are statistics that show how much people litter. This video would be great to show in a classroom because all of the imagery would be very beneficial to visual learners. The third video is a song written by Chu Chu TV called Save the Earth from Global Warming, sung to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. This song would be especially great to show in a classroom of younger kids because they would be able to pick up on the catchy song and it would keep them entertained. The lyrics describe how children can help the plants and trees grow by watering, planting, conserving, and even protesting against cutting. The video portrays a very positive outlook on saving the planet and all of the things that can happen when people simply help. |
EARTH, a poem
I wrote an acrostic poem about the Earth and what it means to me. Poetry is a great way for students of any age to express themselves because there is no limit. I wanted to share my poem not only because of the meaning and connection to the environment, but also because I think that this would be a great activity for a teacher teaching about the environment to have his or her students create. It would give students an opportunity to express their opinions and thoughts about the place that they live and write poems that put images into the heads of people that read them. Acrostic poems are also something that can be implemented into lesson plans from kindergarten all the way to high school. Drawings of the planet and how to save it are one thing, but written words that paint pictures for us have a whole different meaning.
The Environment Word Search
This is a word search that I created at http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/WordSearchSetupForm.asp. I think that it is important to become familiar with vocabulary of environmental education. A lot of the words are ways to help, things that do not help, and words that may be repeated when learning about the environment. These puzzles are easy to make and would be a fun activity to familiarize students with words that you are trying to drill into their heads.
